JUDAISM

Followers of Judaism are often referred to the Jewish Community or Jews.  Judaism originated in the Middle East over 3500 years ago and its greatest figure is regarded by many as Moses, although the Jewish Community trace their history back to Abraham.
The Jewish Community believes that there is only one God with whom they have a covenant. 

Religious Texts and Documents

Judaism has a rich history of religious texts, but the central and most important religious document is the Torah. The Torah is the Old Testament part of the Bible. It's the central and most important document of Judaism and has been used by the Jewish community through the ages. 


Torah refers to the five books of Moses which are known in Hebrew as Chamisha Chumshei Torah.  These are:


It is important  to ensure that the Five Books of Moses are stored upright and are not dropped on the floor. 

Ritual Washing and Ablution

Religious law calls upon the Jewish Community to undertake ritual washings or ablutions that range from immersion of the whole body (tevilah) to pouring water over the hands (netilat yadayim). 


On awakening, some may wish to purify themselves by washing their hands and face and rinsing their mouth.  People must also flow water over their hands before and after meals and recite a blessing. 


Prayers And Religious Holidays 

The Jewish Community traditionally pray in the direction of Jerusalem where the presence of the transcendent God (Shekinah) resides the Holy of Holies of the Temple. The Mizrah which translates literally to mean East is a plaque or other decorative wall hanging which is placed on the Eastern wall on areas where prayer takes place.  A list of all Jewish religious days can be found here


Food 

The Jewish Community eats Kosher food -  outlined in the bible as to what is acceptable.  Non Kosher food includes certain animals (pork and rabbit), most insects and any shellfish.
